Description

Growing Grass is the logical next step in a sproutperson's education, after sprout growing. Doing so will teach you more about plants and the potential of a seed. Grass is what happens if you sprout your for too long. Doing so in a regular Sprouter doesn't work well, so we plant our barely sprouted Grains on a Medium instead - and attend to the crop in a manner befitting Grass. Really it is quite easy, and the resulting crop is beautiful and packed with nutrients. Extracting those nutrients for human consumption is outside the scope of this sampler, but if you want to consider that aspect, take a look at our Juicers.

Though all Grains will theoretically grow into Grass, not all do so, well, every year. So we want you to know that we will be sending you our five best Grass growing Grains when you purchase this sampler. It will always include Wheat and Kat Grass, but beyond that - one never knows for sure.

The Seeds

A Single Harvest Pack of 5 of these....

Wheat Grass

The classic power drink's source plant. Easy to grow and seriously rejuvinating when ingested. If everyone drank this stuff the average life expectancy would jump 10 years, this is greeeaat stuff! Wheat Grass Juice is has a very intense flavor. We've been drinking it since the 1970s and have found that we enjoy it more now than ever - since we got a Green Life (now improved by the mfg. and called Green Star) juicer - we mix our grass juice with carrot and apple juice - it is delicious!

Barley Grass

Whole (hull on) Montana Barley or (on rare occasion) Hulless Barley

A broad blade grass with a lighter green color than Wheat, Barley Grass is consumed by many people in the form of a powder or capsule called Super Barley Green®. The juice is a much more potent food - as are all living foods. The juice is quite intense - flavor wise, so we advise that you mix it with other grains on this page to come up with your tastiest juice. That is a completely subjective decision - some of you might love straight Barley Grass Juice - but around here we like to mix it into our Wheat at a rate of about 4:1 (20% Barley). The Grasses all provide about the same nutrition so mix and match freely.

Kat Grass

Wheat, Oats, Rye, Barley, Flax

Grass for cats, salad for cats (and kittens, and a plethora of other creatures), whatever you call it - it is really amazing stuff!
Cats and other creatures need vegetable matter in their diet, just like people, and Kat Grass supplies that along with great nutrition. We even include a little Flax which is good for their coats.
Many of you know that your cats need this, because they eat your house plants - that is the surest sign that your cat will love this treat. Kat Grass is easily grown - on soil or a soilless medium - like Baby Blanket. All you do to serve your cat (etc.) is to place the container of living grass near their food dish or in some other place they'll find it. They'll do the rest =:-)

Oat Grass

Hulless, Raw Nebraska Oats

We have been getting the highest quality Oats available for many years, thanks to our farmer friends Mark and Ila.
These are raw - no heat has ever been applied to them. They are Hulless Oats (sometimes mistakenly called groats), they grow (in the farmer's fields) without a Hull (they are one of only two Grains we know of, to have a Hulless variety).
Favored by many a cat and human, as well as countless other creatures; Oats are a wonderfully tender Grain which grows a Grass with a mild sweetness.

Rye Grass

Rye produces a Red tinged blade of grass (more so when grown in cooler conditions during the winter months). It has very much the same flavor as Wheat Grass.
It is so beautiful that we mix it with Wheat to produce Christmas Grass when the season calls for it. It looks great in Easter baskets too - as do all of our .

Spelt Grass

This is one seed which we carry only occasionally as it is very hard to find good sprouting Spelt.
A great alternative for those allergic to Wheat. Similar to other grasses in sweetness and nutritional value.

The hulling process is, generally too much for Spelt. Too many of the grains end up broken, and so only the part of the seed with the germ still attached even has a chance to sprout.
This isn't a big deal when it comes to sprouting, as the crop is harvested in just a couple days. But, since growing Grass requires so many days it just doesn't work unless the crop survived hulling well.
We only offer Spelt for Grass when it can grow Grass well.

Triticale Grass

Triticale (Trit-i-Kay-lee) is a fairly new grain - created about 100 years ago.
A combination of wheat and rye (not a genetically modified organism - this was created using the old-time methods), it is similar in taste and like other grasses; it is very nutritious.
A good crop is not always easy to find, though we've had great seed for the past few years. We hope this trend continues, but whatever the case; we only offer Triticale for Grass when it will grow Grass well.

Tray Set - One Crop

Our Single Crop Tray Set consists of three (one of each) 10x20 inch Trays:
Drip, Heavy Duty Planting, and a Cover Tray.

We offer these for growers who want the biggest planting area.
This Tray Set will grow 1-3 pounds of Greens or produce enough Grass to yield 10-20 ounces of Juice.

All of our Trays are intended for growing Greens, Grass, and Micro-Greens.
We grew everything in nursery trays when we were professional growers, but the current tray's drainage configuration (the holes or slits in the bottom) is undesirable sprout growing.

Tray Set - 2 Crop

Our Two-Crop Tray Set consists of:
One 10x20 inch Drip Tray and four 10x10 inch Trays - two for planting and two as Covers.

We offer these for growers who want to grow different crops, or stagger crops, while enjoying a large area to plant in.
This Tray Set's 10x20 total inches will grow 1-3 pounds of Greens or produce enough Grass to yield 10-20 ounces of Juice.

All of our Trays are intended for growing Greens, Grass, and Micro-Greens.

Trays - 5x5

This Tray has Drainage Slits. It is ideal for small crops of Greens, Grass, and Micro-Greens. We use it as both a Planting Tray and a Cover Tray. 8 of these 5x5 inch Trays fit into one 10x20 Drip Tray, giving you almost as much planting area as a full 10x20 Planting Tray - which can produce 1-3 pounds of Greens, or enough Grass to yield 10-20 ounces of Juice.

The narrow drainage slits in this Tray are perfect for any Growing Medium - and when used as a cover - for air-circulation.

All of our Trays are intended for growing Greens, Grass, and Micro-Greens.

We have several different Trays and Tray Sets to choose from.

Sproutpeople Stainless Steel 3-Screen Sprouting Lid Set

Made by Sproutpeople!

Fine mesh, Medium mesh and Coarse mesh.
Our 3-Screen Lid Set is made up of Stainless Steel Mesh - in 3 different mesh sizes (fine, medium and course) - each nestled in a heavy-duty Plastic Ring. Our Screen Lids fit Wide-Mouth Jar Mason Jars, like those we sell.

The wider the mesh - the more readily water and air pass through the screen. Use the fine mesh (the finest mesh size ever!) for small seeds (Leafy and Brassica sprouts), the medium mesh for Grains and small Beans and the coarse mesh for large Beans.
As your sprouts grow bigger, you can move to a bigger mesh size to improve air-circulation and facilitate the escape of hulls, thus making de-hulling easier.
