Description

Growing Greens is a bit more work than growing sprouts, but they offer great culinary enrichment, and it's fun to do.

To find greater detail, and for thorough Instructions, click the name of the Seed or Mix you want to grow or know about.

The Seeds

Buckwheat Lettuce

Whole. In Hull Buckwheat

These Greens which are often called Buckwheat Lettuce, are sprouted (as are almost all Greens) for a couple days and then planted on soil or a similar medium, kept moist for 5 - 7 days to produce a full crop of very tender thin shoots with cute, and outrageously tender leaves and red tinged stems. Very easy to grow.
Read this information before ordering.

Nalo Greens

Buckwheat Lettuce, Sunflower Greens, Pea Shoots, and Radish

We discontinued our old Mesclun Mix Sprout Salad in favor of this blend of Big Greens. At the same time we have expanded our offerings of Micro-Greens, which more than makes up for the absence of the old mix. We hate to disappoint anyone, but really, this is a good change. We have changed the name as well as the ingredients. The name Nalo Greens is from Hawaii, which has been a vacation destination for our family more than once over the years. It's about time we pay tribute for all the joy Hawaii has given us.
The trend on the gourmet side of the sprout industry is towards Baby Greens. A wonderful tasting combination with a great range of textures and striking visual appeal. It is a salad or a salad topping, a sandwich addition, a mix-in for pasta or anything else you can think of - and it is super nutritious as all live/raw foods are.

Pea Shoots

Speckled, Snow or Other Good Shoot Producing Pea

Grown from virtually any Pea variety, Shoots are the plant above the soil. They produce a robust, tender Shoot in 8 - 14 days (depending on your climate, time of year and for how long you grow them). Really excellent stir-fried quickly with some garlic and tamari (soy sauce) and (optionally) ginger.

Note: You can grow shoots from any Pea. They all have different characteristics, so experiment.

Spicy Salad Greens

Daikon Radish, Cress and Arugula

An exceptionally tasty and aromatic Brassica mix. This one can be grown on soil or similar medium, a thoroughly moistened Hemp Bag or our lovely little Micro-Greens device, the Miniature Garden. Milder than (not as hot) the sprouts produced by these same seeds, Spicy Salad Greens is a beautiful gourmet addition to salads - just scatter a small bunch on top.
We never give away our mix recipes, but we will warn you that this mix is made up mostly of Daikon Radish. The Cress and Arugula also grow much smaller plants, so you may not even see them when you harvest. They are there though, and as they have so much flavor, they impart what we want. Do be sure to cut as close to the medium as possible when harvesting, so you get as much of their flavors as possible.

Sunflower Greens

Black Oil Sunflower - in shell

Greens grown from Sunflowers are amazingly delicious! One of the greatest surprises in the world of sprouts are Sunnys!
If you you don't feel you know us well enough to take our word for it, just look under your bird feeder in summertime for a sorta thick stemmed plant about 4-6"" tall, with 2 leaves on top. Pick it off above the soil - wash well - and eat it stem and leaves..... See? Great aren't they?
Now you can grow your own!

Tray Set - One Crop

Our Single Crop Tray Set consists of three (one of each) 10x20 inch Trays:
Drip, Heavy Duty Planting, and a Cover Tray.

We offer these for growers who want the biggest planting area.
This Tray Set will grow 1-3 pounds of Greens or produce enough Grass to yield 10-20 ounces of Juice.

All of our Trays are intended for growing Greens, Grass, and Micro-Greens.
We grew everything in nursery trays when we were professional growers, but the current tray's drainage configuration (the holes or slits in the bottom) is undesirable sprout growing.

Tray Set - 2 Crop

Our Two-Crop Tray Set consists of:
One 10x20 inch Drip Tray and four 10x10 inch Trays - two for planting and two as Covers.

We offer these for growers who want to grow different crops, or stagger crops, while enjoying a large area to plant in.
This Tray Set's 10x20 total inches will grow 1-3 pounds of Greens or produce enough Grass to yield 10-20 ounces of Juice.

All of our Trays are intended for growing Greens, Grass, and Micro-Greens.

Trays - 5x5

This Tray has Drainage Slits. It is ideal for small crops of Greens, Grass, and Micro-Greens. We use it as both a Planting Tray and a Cover Tray. 8 of these 5x5 inch Trays fit into one 10x20 Drip Tray, giving you almost as much planting area as a full 10x20 Planting Tray - which can produce 1-3 pounds of Greens, or enough Grass to yield 10-20 ounces of Juice.

The narrow drainage slits in this Tray are perfect for any Growing Medium - and when used as a cover - for air-circulation.

All of our Trays are intended for growing Greens, Grass, and Micro-Greens.

We have several different Trays and Tray Sets to choose from.

Sproutpeople Stainless Steel 3-Screen Sprouting Lid Set

Made by Sproutpeople!

Fine mesh, Medium mesh and Coarse mesh.
Our 3-Screen Lid Set is made up of Stainless Steel Mesh - in 3 different mesh sizes (fine, medium and course) - each nestled in a heavy-duty Plastic Ring. Our Screen Lids fit Wide-Mouth Jar Mason Jars, like those we sell.

The wider the mesh - the more readily water and air pass through the screen. Use the fine mesh (the finest mesh size ever!) for small seeds (Leafy and Brassica sprouts), the medium mesh for Grains and small Beans and the coarse mesh for large Beans.
As your sprouts grow bigger, you can move to a bigger mesh size to improve air-circulation and facilitate the escape of hulls, thus making de-hulling easier.
