Exotic Sprouts

These are all listed here because they are other then common sprouting seeds.
We have used the words Unusual and Bizarre to describe these - but whatever we call them, really they are here because they are Exotic. They are in some cases, so different from each other that trying to describe them as a group is pointless, but I have to try.
We have moved our Alliums here. Allium is the Latin name for the plant family that includes Garlic, Leek and Onion; Beautiful little black seeds that produce some of the strongest, most recognizable flavors in the sprout universe!
The Sprouts of these seeds taste just like the plants which they produce (which is so often the case in the sprout world) in the garden. These seeds are all expensive because they are hard seeds to produce, taking farmers years to establish, so they are short in supply - and since these are all from certified organic sources, they are even more rare. On top of the cost there are other things unique to Alliums: They take longer to grow than most any other Sprout - from 10 - 15 days - And the seed is short lived under normal storage conditions. Freezing the seed will extend the viability of the seed by years. Without freezing it is unlikely that these seeds will germinate for more than a year - so freeze 'em - that's what we do.

We have also relocated our mixes that are combinations of seeds so different that they need to be grown in 2 steps. 2-stop mixes require a bit more effort but they are quite fun and give one a sense of accomplishment.
Besides moving seeds from other categories, we have added a new seed or two, and will probably add more later. Just take a look down the page and see for yourself =:-)

THE SEEDS

Clem's Choice - Mix #9

$7.55
per Lb.
Add to Cart

Green Lentils, Fenugreek and Oriental Mustard

The oddest combo we've come up with - Clem's Choice defies description. I can't remember how (or why) I ever came up with this, but my best guess is that in deciding to name a mix after our 2nd dog Clementine, I combined seeds that were the same color as her. It is alternately called Mix #9 in homage to the Beatle's oddest song.

Clem's Choice requires 2 steps to complete as the seeds need different amounts of time to finish sprouting. This can be done in one Sprouter but 2 makes it easier.

Dill Sprouts

per 1/4 lb.

Dill joined our straight seed offerings in 2010. We have used it, in Leafy Sprout Mixes since our early days as Sproutpeople. Dill is a very flavorful seed, and an even more flavorful sprout. Growing Dill sprouts is different then growing just about any other crop - it's easy to grow, takes a long time, and changes flavors dramatically over time. Dill is an exceptionally light seed, and since it is fairly expensive, we sell it by the 1/4 pound. That's something we do in very few cases.

Fenugreek Sprouts

$8.88
per Lb.

An absolutely gorgeous sprout from the most aromatic of seeds (Fenugreek is known more as a spice). Fenugreek is easy to grow and extremely nutritious. It does have a flavor that many consider bitter, but those who like it, love it.
Fenugreek is actually a legume, but we considered it too confusing to put it in our Bean section.

Fenugreek has gained popularity with women in recent years due to research that indicates that it increases the breast size. We kid you not. It is also excellent for breast health, so it's not just about vanity @;~)

Garlic Sprouts

per 1/2 lb.

Garlic is our favorite Allium. Though it is actually a chive seed, it tastes just like Garlic. You can find Garlic in our Leafy sprout - Italian Blend as well. One of the slowest sprouts, Garlic takes up to 15 days to finish sprouting - but it is worth it! An amazing flavor - assuming you like Garlic! This seed comes, once again, from a Certified Organic farm in the midwest. They produce the highest quality Garlic Chive seed we have ever seen!

Note: We sell Garlic by the 1/2 pound.

Hot + Sweet Sprouts

$7.95
per Lb.
Add to Cart

Wheat, Green Peas, Yellow Peas, Green Lentils and Orange Lentils, Daikon + China Rose Radish

Hot by virtue of Radish, sweetened by the Wheat, and made more attractive and texturally pleasing by the legumes, this is a Very Pretty, if weird mix, with quite a few devoted followers! We used to sell 20 pounds of this every week at our farmer's market stand. Hot + Sweet requires 2 steps to complete as the Radish need grow 2-3 more days than the Lentils and Wheat. This can be done in one Sprouter but 2 is better.

Leek Sprouts

$22.22
per Lb.
Out of stock

Like the other Alliums on this page, Leek sprouts taste like leeks. They take 10 - 15 days to sprout.
Leek seed is exceedingly hard to find, and may never be in stock again, but we keep our page up in hopes that we will have it again someday, and because we want to keep our instructions available to those who have some. It is a very expensive seed - like others that are not produced specifically for the sprout industry. Garden seed companies may be a source if you are looking specifically for Leek.

Note: We sell Leek by the 1/2 pound.

Mother's Mix

$11.11
per Lb.
Add to Cart

Red Clover, Alfalfa, Broccoli, Fenugreek, Natural & Black Sesame & Garlic Chive

This Mix (new in 2009) really should be named Crystal's Mothers Mix as it was suggested to us by a very thoughtful customer.
Mother's Mix is basically a Leafy Sprout Blend - it appears in that category as well. Mother's Mix is full of nutrients and other things that are essential for pregnant and nursing moms. It tastes fantastic, and anyone and everyone can enjoy that!

Onion Sprouts

$19.86
per 1/2 lb.
Out of stock

An Onion seed produces a tiny onion plant - like a miniature scallion. Usually a sprout is a root, but in the case of the Alliums it is a shoot (that part of a plant which, if grown in a garden or on soil etc., grows above the soil) - which tastes just like an Onion, what else? Onion takes about 10 - 15 days to sprout. You will also find onion as an ingredient in our Russian Mix - which is our personal favorite leafy blend.
High quality Onion seed from certified organic sources has been difficult to find for some time now, so if we don't have any, please know that we are actively looking. We always have enough to keep our Russian Mix available. Onion is so essential to a sprout kitchen, that we carry conventional seed if organic seed isn't available. As much as we dislike doing that, Onion is grown with so little chemical input, that we feel fine about eating it at home.

Note: We sell Onion by the 1/2 pound.

Mom's Sprout Kit

Sprouter: An Easy Sprout Sprouter. Seeds: 1 pound of Mother's Mix

This simple kit is for moms to be, new moms, or anyone else who wants a simple kit with a great new (in 2009) mix. Being a mom - for several months before birth, and years after, is one of the toughest jobs on the planet. Sprouts can help - if just a little. We made this seed mix for mothers, and we made a kit by adding the perfect sprouter. It's simple, but we figured that since moms are generally short on time; we'd save you a click by putting these together. Keep up the great work. As hard as it is, there is no one that is more loved than you.

1 Qt. Jar

This is a One-Quart, Wide-Mouth Mason Jar.
It isn't accompanied by a lid. Those are purchased separately. Keep on scrolling....

The least expensive, most basic sprouter, Jars - when topped by Screen Lids, are a fine choice for any skilled sprouter or for those willing to work a bit more diligently at rinsing and draining, or as an additional Sprouter, for easy sprouts, like Beans and Grains. A great choice for Pre-Sprouting Grass and Greens too!

Half-Gallon Jar

This is a Two-Quart (1/2 Gallon), Wide-Mouth Mason Jar.
It isn't accompanied by a lid. Those are purchased separately. Keep on scrolling....

Sproutpeople Stainless Steel 3-Screen Sprouting Lid Set

Made by Sproutpeople!

Fine mesh, Medium mesh and Coarse mesh.
Our 3-Screen Lid Set is made up of Stainless Steel Mesh - in 3 different mesh sizes (fine, medium and course) - each nestled in a heavy-duty Plastic Ring. Our Screen Lids fit Wide-Mouth Jar Mason Jars, like those we sell.

The wider the mesh - the more readily water and air pass through the screen. Use the fine mesh (the finest mesh size ever!) for small seeds (Leafy and Brassica sprouts), the medium mesh for Grains and small Beans and the coarse mesh for large Beans.
As your sprouts grow bigger, you can move to a bigger mesh size to improve air-circulation and facilitate the escape of hulls, thus making de-hulling easier.

Bio-Set

Bio-Set is a low-rinse, round, European sprouter with 3 growing trays, a drip tray at its base and a reservoir tray on top.

Though we dislike Bio-Set as a Sprouter - due to its poor drainage and air-circulation - it remains quite popular.

Fine for big seeds like Beans and Grains, Bio-Set is among the most attractive Sprouters.
We continue to offer it due to our customer's demands. Please Don't buy this before thoroughly reading our detailed Bio-Set page.
