Micro-Greens

Sprouts are eaten root and all. A Green's roots are buried in something (soil or some other moisture holding something) - so we don't eat them. Greens are just a plant which grows vertically and which we harvest by cutting it close to its base.

Some of these seeds form gelatin sacks - they are called mucilaginous. Those seeds will never sprout in a conventional sprouter using common sprouting methods. We are experimenting with alternative methods to sprout mucilaginous seeds - and we will certainly share them with you, if and when we establish a consistent technique. Mucilaginous seeds store water around themselves, which is a totally awesome trick in nature - but makes a slippery mess in a normal Sprouter, but they do make great Greens - we call them Micro-Greens.

Any tiny seed; (alfalfa, clover, broccoli, arugula, cabbage, cress, radish.....) will produce such a plant if grown in this manner, but we don't list them all here, we just list the ones most commonly grown as Micro-Greens - but - feel free - try any tiny seed. Experiment!

We were growing Micro-Greens in the early 1990s. Virtually nobody was interested in them back then, so we focused on our sprout business (which of course also included Grass and Greens). Over the years, Micros have grown to be generally accepted. Since we never spent a lot of time growing them due to our customer's lack of interest, and our immersion in all things sprout, we fell behind in this field. We have been trying to make up for lost time, and have been working with a huge variety of seeds in the recent years, looking for those that will perform well as Micros, and searching for ingredients for a mix we can offer to you. Along the way we have learned a whole lot about Micro-Greens. Our offerings are vastly improved, and our instructions will take you to the brink of gardening. Of all our new offerings, we are most proud of our mix - Bruno's Indoor Garden. We have never had to spend so long working up a combination of seeds. It took us years - literally - to get what we were looking for. As proud as we are of Bruno's Indoor Garden, we are prouder still of our new instructions for growing Micro-Greens. We feel like we're on the verge of bridging the gap between kitchen and garden. We are having so much fun!

Among the seeds we have been working with are; many varieties of lettuce, kohlrabi, orach, basil, turnip, and carrot, as well as a wide assortment of mustards. Some of these made their way into Bruno's Indoor Garden, others are still being experimented with. We expect to have more mixes as well as straight seed offerings, in the future.
As almost all of these seeds are hard to find from organic sources, and are very expensive - we can not stock large quantities. For those reasons several of the items on this page are offered by the 1/2 pound.
We determined many years ago that selling fractional pounds of our sprouting seeds did not work financially. We are a business after all, and to our way of thinking, Sproutpeople is one of our children. It is a living organism. The foremost thing is survival. Please accept our choices. If we ever find it workable to offer fractional pounds of other seeds, we will. Another reason why it makes sense here is that our newest instructions require a fraction of the seed required by more traditional Micro-Greens instructions, so 1/2 pound will go a long way if you choose to grow as we propose.

Have fun growing these, and educating yourself. This is cutting edge stuff in Sproutville.

THE SEEDS

Arugula Micro-Greens

$18.54
per Lb.
Add to Cart

This mildly spicy Brassica (the same family as Broccoli, Cabbage, Mustard, Radish...) has one of the greatest flavors on earth! Arugula is a very fast grower which must Not be soaked (when grown alone) because it is muciloginous. Just sprinkle some seeds on moist soil or a thoroughly moistened Hemp Bag or other medium, or our small but very attractive Micro-Greens device; the Miniature Garden and watch your crop grow - in just 5-7 days - into the tastiest green food you've ever experienced. Once you have enjoyed Arugula you won't be able to imagine life without it!

The secret ingredient in our French Garden Mix, Arugula was not available as an organic crop back in 1994. Working for years with our dear farmer friends Mark + Ila we have established it as a standard certified organic crop which has been added by many a wise sprout grower to their ingredient list. Arugula along with Cress (which has exactly the same organic history), Onion and Garlic Chive are without a doubt the most essential flavor additions to any sprout kitchen, but to us Arugula is the most essential and unique!

Canadian researchers have discovered that the antioxidant content of sprouted Arugula is 2nd only to Broccoli!

Broccoli Greens - Conventional

$24.75
per Lb.
Add to Cart

Famous for it's antioxidant content; Broccoli sprouts contain something like 50 times the sulfurophane found in mature broccoli, by weight. Broccoli Greens haven't been researched to the best of our knowledge, so we can't be sure of nutritional specifics - but they are wonderfully tender and tasty - especially if you like broccoli.

We've grown thousands of pounds of Broccoli Sprouts since 1997. We have purchased our conventional Broccoli seed from this same farmer since 1998. Their seed always produces large flavorful sprouts. Given the almost complete lack of available seed, we feel very fortunate to have it! BUT - it is NON-Organic. We now offer certified organic Broccoli seed as well, but this seed remains consistently great in flavor, yield and germination. This is a Great Sprouting Seed!

We Sproutpeople are pretty Green people. We got certified organic in 1993. We've purchased seed from organic farmers since we began - in some cases demanding they raise their prices (we NEED them to be successful if we are to be able to buy from them in the future). We have grown our own organic garden (we even moved back-to-the-land in search of self-sufficiency), and have raised some our own garden seed over the years. We have long eaten a mostly organic diet. We stock over 100 seeds these days - all of them - with the exception of this Broccoli - come from sources that are certified organic. Now that we have finally found great organic Broccoli seed that grows sprouts with the quality and flavor of the those produced by this seed, we can offer you both. As green as we are, we are also loyal. Our farmer assures us that there is very little chemical input used in Broccoli seed production, and there is none at all close to harvest time. We feel good enough about this seed to eat its sprouts ourselves. We have fed these sprouts to our dogs since they were pups, and our children since they were infants. Enough said. At lesat, until we develop a secure relationship with our organic Broccoli seed farmer, and know he can meet our seed needs, we will continue to offer this conventional Broccoli as well. It is a truly great seed!

Demand worldwide is greater than the supply of seed, so the price remains high =:-{

Broccoli Greens - Organic

Famous for it's antioxidant content; Broccoli sprouts contain something like 50 times the sulfurophane found in mature broccoli, by weight. Broccoli Greens haven't been researched to the best of our knowledge, so we can't be sure of nutritional specifics - but they are wonderfully tender and tasty - especially if you like broccoli.

This is the Organic Broccoli we have been looking for! It is as vigorous and delicious as our long-time conventional Broccoli. It comes from a farmer who is fairly new to us, and though we like him and his family very much, until we forge a relationship and see that he can meet our seed needs, demand and quality wise, we continue to offer our conventional Broccoli as well. This is far-and-away the best organic Broccoli we have ever enjoyed. It is ever so slightly more spicy than our other Broccoli.

This Broccoli is from a source which is Certified Organic.

Tatsoi, Purple Kohlrabi, Red Russian Kale, Red Cabbage, Turnip, Alfalfa, Arugula, Cress, Red Giant Mustard, Red Oak and Green Romaine Lettuce, Mizuna, Pink and Purple Orach

A most exceptional mix! We have worked longer on this - and there are more seed varieties together here - than any other mix we've ever come up with.
If you grow this just to the Cotyledon stage, as is traditional with Micro-Greens, the plants will be fairly uniform in height (no easy feat for us seed mixers),
but what we really want is for you to try growing to the True Leaf stage (see our Notes section (on the mix' Detail Page) for specifics.
When grown this long the plants are less uniform, but the mix tastes even better and looks absolutely astonishing!

Note: We sell Bruno's Indoor Garden by the 1/2 pound.

Celery Greens

Customers have asked us for years if we would sell straight Celery. We have adored it for many years as an ingredient in our Nick's Hot Sprout Salad. Mixing up a batch of Nick's is always a joy. The Celery is so aromatic that it makes the whole place smell fantastic.
Celery seed is hard to come by in quantities, and it is difficult to sprout alone, so we refrained from offering it.
But, we discovered that it grows well, albeit slowly as a Micro-Green, so we decided to let folks who want it, have it. Honestly, we don't like its flavor, but who are we to decide for others?
Seed supply is still problematic, but we think we can maintain availability, so here's your chance to try growing Celery Micro-Greens.

Celery is a very slow crop, so be patient. It has other unique characteristics - like its amazing tinyness.
Read our Instructions and our Notes so that you get the most from this unusual seed.

Note: We sell Celery by the 1/2 pound.

Chia is a very nutritious mucilaginous seed, and an easy to grow Micro-Green.
This is another seed folks asked us for - for years - before we ever stocked it. We could never find a source which was certified organic and we didn't want to stock another expensive seed, but we special-ordered some for a customer and when we saw how lovely the seed was, we fell in love. Again.
Chia is among the most glorious of all seeds, in appearance. It is a mottled black and white/off-white. Gorgeous!
When we found a stable source of seed - from a supplier who IS certified organic, we decided to commit to it long-term.

Note: We sell Chia by the 1/2 pound.

Garlic Chives are the slowest of sprouts. As Micro-Greens they can be even slower - but they're worth it! They have an awesome flavor (assuming you like garlic =;-)!
Your finished crop will look like Micro-Scallions. Very Cool!

Though it is actually a chive seed, it tastes just like Garlic. You can find Garlic in our Leafy sprout mixes - Italian Blend, and Mother's Mix as well.
These are a very expensive crop. There is only one farmer we know of in the U.S. who grows this seed and is certified organic. Supply is always much more limited than the demand - hence the high price.

Note: We sell Garlic by the 1/2 pound.

We have long used Mizuna in a few of our mixes, but we have never sold it straight due to limited availability and price. But, we love this stuff, and enough of our patrons asked for it, so we finally added it to our list of offerings.
Mizuna is another great cool-weather garden plant in addition to being an easy to grow Micro-Green. It is an Asian Mustard, but it is more mild in flavor compared to most other mustards. As it is muciloginous, it is not to be soaked when grown straight.

Note: We sell Mizuna by the 1/4 pound.

Mustard Greens

Tastes just like horseradish. One of the MOST amazing flavors in the sprout universe!

This is Oriental Mustard - it is a yellow seed and is the only Mustard we have ever seen that is not muciloginous.
Oriental Mustard is hard to find as very few farmers grow it. We have gone years without it more than once, so get it while you can. Our current crop is something of a miracle in fact.
Early snow in Saskatchewan this past fall buried a beautiful crop of Oriental Mustard. The miracle is that there was a freak warm spell in November (amazing!) that lasted long enough (amazing!) for the seed to get harvested. Beyond that, the moisture did not damage the seed. That is truly amazing.

Daikon Radish, Cress and Arugula

An exceptionally tasty and aromatic mix. This one can be grown on soil or similar medium, a thoroughly moistened Hemp Bag or our lovely little Micro-Greens device, the Miniature Garden. Milder than (not as hot) the sprouts produced by these same seeds. A beautiful gourmet addition to salads - just scatter a small bunch on top.
We never give away our mix recipes, but we will warn you that this mix is made up mostly of Daikon Radish. The Cress and Arugula also grow much smaller plants, so you may not even see them when you harvest. They are there though, and as they have so much flavor, they impart what we want. Do be sure to cut as close to the medium as possible when harvesting, so you get as much flavor as possible.

We love seeds! I (Gil) have a seed problem; I never met a seed I didn't like. I don't even care for turnips, so why would I want to grow them as a Micro-Green or a sprout?
Why not? I told you - I have a problem. I like to think it's a good problem.

We don't expect Turnip to be a long-term offering, but we got our hands on some excellent seed, and we figured we'd share it while we have it.
I suspect availability of this seed will be sporadic at best.

You can sprout it like other sproutable Brassicas, but we're offering it as a Micro-Green because we like offering Turnip Greens - it's just so right @:-)

These seeds produce a mild Brassicas Micro-Green. They are very similar to Green Cabbage in flavor and leaf appearance.

Note: We sell Turnip by the 1/2 pound.

Kits & Samplers

You'll find many more Samplers and Kits elsewhere in our sprout shop - there are a whole lot in fact, in our Kits & Samplers section.

Micro-Greens Sampler

Single Harvest Packs* of Alfalfa, Arugula, Broccoli, Cress and Radish

Every living seed wil grow into a plant. when that seed is small we call the first stage of the plant a Micro-Green. There are many seeds you can grow this way. This Sampler will give you a tiny taste of what these tiny plants have to offer. Get to know Micro-Greens.

*These are smaller than our other Single Harvest packs because fewer seeds are used when growing Micro-Greens in a small area. Each Single Harvest pack will plant up to 20 sq. inches.

Micro-Greens Kit

A Miniature Garden Sprouter, 8 Baby Blanket Pads (pre-cut, compostable replacement pads for your Mini-Garden) and 1/4 lb. each of Arugula, Cress, Broccoli, Clover, Radish and Mustard

Micro-Greens are just sprouts which grow like plants - they bury their roots in (in this case) a moist felt pad and grow straight up, unfurling leaves atop thin stems. This is a really cool way to grow all sorts of tiny seeds - like Alfalfa, Clover, any of our Gourmet Leafy blends, Mustard, Radish, Broccoli and more. It is The Perfect way to grow Arugula and Cress (which are mucilaginous seeds which must be grown as Greens because the gel sack they form makes them impossible to sprout in a traditional sprouter using traditional sprouting methods) which is all the reason anyone needs to get into this - once you've had Arugula and Cress Micro-Greens your life will never be the same! They are just Awesome!

Micro-Greens Kit - Seed Refill

1/4 lb. each of Arugula, Cress, Broccoli, Clover, Radish and Mustard

This is a SEED ONLY refill for our Micro-Greens Kit.

Sprouting Devices
for Micro-Greens

Follow links for detailed information about each Sprouter....

Miniature Garden

The only device made just for Micro-Greens!
The Miniature Garden is a small and attractive device. It's great for growing small crops of Micro-Greens, decorative growing and growing at work.

Using the Miniature Garden is extremely simple. Just sprinkle small seeds on the moist felt pads and watch 'em grow!
Well, there's a tiny bit more then that, but not much.

Not a big crop sprouter, but very fun and exceptionally attractive as Sprouters go!
The Mini-Garden has 4 trays, each measuring approximately 4x5 inches.
When not in use, the trays nestle in the base - which also measures approximately 4x5 inches.

Hemp Bag

Made by Sproutpeople!

The perfect Bean and Grain sprouter. The Hemp Bag is even capable of growing Leafy and Brassica sprouts - though it takes extra care to do those well. It's also excellent for Micro-Greens - it acts as a planting medium.

The Hemp Bag is the most convenient travel sprouter ever. It folds up flat and does a great job hanging on a backpack, on a boat or over a hotel sink!

The Hemp Bag offers superior drainage and exceptional air-circulation.

Our Hemp Bags are made for us, locally.
They measure Approximately 6 1/2 inches wide x 9 1/2 inches tall.

Trays - 5x5

This Tray has Drainage Slits. It is ideal for small crops of Greens, Grass, and Micro-Greens. We use it as both a Planting Tray and a Cover Tray. 8 of these 5x5 inch Trays fit into one 10x20 Drip Tray, giving you almost as much planting area as a full 10x20 Planting Tray - which can produce 1-3 pounds of Greens, or enough Grass to yield 10-20 ounces of Juice.

The narrow drainage slits in this Tray are perfect for any Growing Medium - and when used as a cover - for air-circulation.

All of our Trays are intended for growing Greens, Grass, and Micro-Greens.

We have several different Trays and Tray Sets to choose from.
