Nuts, Seeds & More...

We have re-classified and combined some of our offerings on this page. For years previous, we have incorrectly classified some of our seeds as Grains - specifically Amaranth, Buckwheat Groats, and Quinoa, which are in fact Pseudo-Grains. Pseudograins are gluten-free and easy to digest. They're great options for celiacs (folks allergic to gluten). Those Pseudograins have now been moved here to keep company with our Nuts & Seeds.

These are all very fast sprouts. The most tender and delicious, non-leafy sprouts reside here. Almonds and Peanuts (peanuts are actually legumes, so they also reside on our Bean page) are the most addictive of all sprouts. Pumpkins and Sunflowers are done (after an hour of Soaking) and 0-12 hours of sprouting, and though they don't store well as sprouts, they won't have too - you'll gobble them down in a hurry.
Madison Market combines all of these most addictive seeds. It is among the most popular of all our items - it is the trail mix of the sprout universe.
We include Hemp here as well. Of course, since we are in the U.S., we can not sell live Hemp seed, which is tragic. Hemp is an amazingly nutritious seed - containing all the essential amino acids and fatty acids we humans require, as well as a wide range of vitamins and minerals and a good deal of protein. We include it here for those of you lucky enough to live in a country that allows you access to it. We know how to sprout it, so following its links will take you to our sprouting instructions.

Something to be aware of when dealing with these Seeds, Nuts and Pseudograins: Once a seed has Soaked up its fill of water - it is alive. The Soak turns a dormant seed into a living seed. That is the biggest nutritional jump in the entire sprouting process. Once Soaked a seed is without enzyme inhibitors - a very good thing indeed - so they'll digest themselves and nourish you without requiring any enzymes from your body. With some of these seeds we do not even want them to put out a root at all. We refer to such seeds as Soaks. The root we expect to see on a sprout is largely overrated, and in the case of most of these seeds; undesirable. We make this point repeatedly around our site, but you'll see it more in this section than anywhere else. We just need you to understand the reality - it's a fundamental truth - especially in this seedy part of Sproutville.

THE SEEDS

Almond Sprouts

Almond Sprouts are often called "soaks" because they swell rather than sprout, producing only a tiny bulge at their germ instead of a root. Almond Soaks are absolute heaven to munch, though rather expensive.

Almonds are THE most addictive of all sprouts - er, soaks, so enjoy with caution =:-}

Add Almonds to our San Francisco Mix and make some of This 5-Minute Recipe for absolutely any reason - as an appetizer, a pot-luck dish, whatever. OMG!

Amaranth Sprouts

Amaranth is an ancient pseudograin which has been used for millennia for its leaf and its seed. In the sprout world we generally use it as a seed, though it can be grown into Micro-Greens as well. We don't offer it as such because we find its flavor unpleasant. It is a very tasty sprout with a great texture - it sorta pops like popcorn when you bite down on it. It's a very tiny seed, which produces red-tinged sprouts whether you Soak it or not. You can toss some Amaranth Sprouts into or onto just about anything you eat. Their size is a great visual addition to any dish. Several studies have shown that Amaranth has a positive effect on a variety of ailments; hypertension, heart disease and cholesterol to name a few.

Buckwheat Groats

Hulled Buckwheat

These are hulled Buckwheat. The word Groat literally means "a hulled seed". They are one of the quickest sprouts around - soak 'em for 20-30 minutes, rinse a few times and you have sprouts in about 36-48 hours, or just Soak 'em and eat 'em.
Buckwheat Groats are nutty, plump and extremely tender. They make a great snack, and a phenomenal, live Breakfast Cereal!

If you like the idea of Sprout Cereal, be sure to check out our Oats + Groats Mix.

Hemp Sprouts

Out of stock

We don't sell Hemp because it is still not legal to even have (much less sell) a seed of the genus Canibus which can germinate, in the US. ABSURD! Hemp is a plant that could replace fossil fuel to power our vehicles (bio-diesel) and make plastic - AND it enriches the soil (unlike corn (think ethanol) which depletes soil. Hemp is easy to grow organically and so would be a great crop that would reduce agricultural poisons and - in a far more perfect world - could begin to bring back family farms due to the high demand for it and good price farmers get for all parts of the plant! This is an amazingly great seed and we're happy to offer some information about it. We will most definitely sell it - if we are ever allowed too!

Madison Market Mix

Peanuts, Sunflower Seeds (Hulled), Almonds, and Pumpkins (Hulled or Naked)

This mix is beyond outrageous! Market Mix is the trail mix of sprouts, it is addictive and routinely consumed around our house while the seeds are still soaking. Why Wait? It sold out fast during our Farmers Market days in Madison, Wisconsin - for which it is named.

It is a very quick mix to grow, though the resulting sprouts are not so much sprouts as "Soaks" - that is, they plump up with water but produce no root. This mix has a shorter shelf life than most sprouts - once grown it is best consumed within 48 hours, but believe us - it won't last even that long once you taste it. The shelf life issue is one of flavor more than decomposition. As a rule the Pumpkins will get a bit bitter after a few days and the Sunflowers might get a bit over-ripe, but we've kept it for almost 2 weeks in storage tests and found it still quite tasty. Decide for yourself - like we say - it isn't likely to go uneaten so its sort of a moot point @:-)

Buckwheat Groats + Hulless Oats

Breakfast Sprouts?! It's about time!!!

Top these sprouts with milk (cow, soy, rice, goat...) and a little maple syrup (our favorite) and you have the perfect breakfast. It has been a very long time since we ate breakfast with any regularity, but this has changed our lives. Oats + Groats is delicious (the maple syrup doesn't hurt either =;-) and has a great soft crunchy texture. One-half cup of this "cereal" provides a great nutritious, and delicious start to your day - it is a "no brainer", try it and see.

Oats + Groats is a Very Quick sprout. You can Soak it for 1/2 an hour, Rinse it, Drain it, and eat it up (once soaked a seed is alive), or you can sprout it longer - whatever you like.
Though a very simple mix, we consider it one our best. Try some Sprouts for Breakfast!

Peanut Sprouts

Actually a legume not a nut, Raw Valencia Peanuts make for one way popular sprout! We got thousands of folks addicted to these over the years at the Dane County Farmer's Market in Madison, Wisconsin (where we sold sprouts every Saturday from April-November for 10 years). Peanuts are best when they put out only a bulge at their tip (germ), not a big root, but you can decide for yourself (assuming that you can keep from eating them long enough to let them grow).

Pumpkin Sprouts

Pumpkins are a pretty high end seed. They are expensive and the finished product is best eaten FRESH (as soon as done). Pumpkins are not Sprouts - they are "Soaks". They soak for an hour, during which time they turn into nutrition packed living food, and they are done then and there. They are exceptional, buttery flavored delights. It has been years since we adored our Pumpkin seed consistently. We vastly prefer Naked Pumpkin seeds, but they are extremely rare - especially at an affordable price. So usually we have Hulled, which vary quite a lot, lot to lot. Still - we only offer the best seeds we can find, and if we can't find any that meet our standards we don't offer them. They always taste great fresh out of the Sprouter.

Pumpkin seed is especially good for men. It encourages prostate health.

Quinoa (Keen-wah) is an ancient pseudograin which originated in the Andes region of South America, where our seed comes from even today. Quinoa has been cultivated for 6000 years. It was a staple of the Inca diet, and they considered it .
Quinoa is the only sprout which contains every single amino-acid. It is another one of the quickest sprouts, prefering to soak for only 30 minutes and showing 2 roots per seed - usually within 24 hours. It is very beautiful as well as delicious. Like its relative, Amaranth, it has a mild beet-like (they too are related) flavor, though it's also nutty.

Sesame is a small seed which makes a great, nutritious addition to many a meal - sprinkle it on salads, sandwiches, stirfry, desserts, souffles - you name it - it is quite inocuous due to its size and tenderness when sprouted.
Black Sesame is a beautiful Black and White when sprouted (the sprouts are white), like tiny dominos. We carry Black Sesame because one of our aesthetically observant customers/sproutpeople told us about them =:-()

Hulled Sunflower Seeds

Hulled (out of shell) Sunnys are a very quick crop. Though some lots germinate fast enough that we grow them longer, we generally grow them as Soaks around our house. These are so delicious we just can't wait - and why should we?!
These are hard to find in great condition as the hulling process usually results in a high percentage of broken seeds. We have however, for the past few years, had access to consistently great seed. That's not to say there aren't broken seeds - there's no way around that, but they are great. We like to think we know - we sprout a whole bunch of seeds around here =;-)
Eat them straight from the sprouter, on salads, cereals, sandwiches or any place at all!

1 Qt. Jar

This is a One-Quart, Wide-Mouth Mason Jar.
It isn't accompanied by a lid. Those are purchased separately. Keep on scrolling....

The least expensive, most basic sprouter, Jars - when topped by Screen Lids, are a fine choice for any skilled sprouter or for those willing to work a bit more diligently at rinsing and draining, or as an additional Sprouter, for easy sprouts, like Beans and Grains. A great choice for Pre-Sprouting Grass and Greens too!

Sproutpeople Stainless Steel 3-Screen Sprouting Lid Set

Made by Sproutpeople!

Fine mesh, Medium mesh and Coarse mesh.
Our 3-Screen Lid Set is made up of Stainless Steel Mesh - in 3 different mesh sizes (fine, medium and course) - each nestled in a heavy-duty Plastic Ring. Our Screen Lids fit Wide-Mouth Jar Mason Jars, like those we sell.

The wider the mesh - the more readily water and air pass through the screen. Use the fine mesh (the finest mesh size ever!) for small seeds (Leafy and Brassica sprouts), the medium mesh for Grains and small Beans and the coarse mesh for large Beans.
As your sprouts grow bigger, you can move to a bigger mesh size to improve air-circulation and facilitate the escape of hulls, thus making de-hulling easier.

Bio-Set

Bio-Set is a low-rinse, round, European sprouter with 3 growing trays, a drip tray at its base and a reservoir tray on top. Though we dislike Bio-Set as a Sprouter - due to its poor drainage and air-circulation - it remains quite popular Fine for big seeds like Beans and Grains, Bio-Set is among the most attractive Sprouters.
We continue to offer it due to our customer's demands. Please Don't buy this before thoroughly reading our detailed Bio-Set page.
